Finally…Internet!!

I finally got my DSL connection restored after a 5-day outage.  It really sucks that it took Embarq that long to get my service restored.  I had to hound them with phone calls each day.

I think I deserve a refund this month.

Netbook Update

It’s been a while since I posted anything techie.  I guess I’ll post an update on using my HP Mini 1000.

So far so good.  When I started using it, I was changing OSes every few days trying to get the right feel.  I started with the default HP MIE OS.  Then I moved to Linux Mint.  Next up it was Ubuntu Netbook Remix.  The final move was to the tried and true Ubuntu.  Here are the reasons I dropped the other OSes:

HP Mie

Waayyy too restrictive.  HP did a good job trying to make Linux dummy proof, but they went a little too far.  I didn’t really care for the interface.  Being a Linux user for about the past 4 years, I know what it has to offer.  The MIE was a handicap for me.

Linux Mint

After reading a few blogs, I decided to give Mint a try.  This was a very nice fit for the netbook.  Since Mint is based on Ubuntu, I kinda felt at home.  It’s basically an interface update for with a few extra tools.  After using it a while, I realized that the interface wasn’t all that great (I can customize plain old Ubuntu to look much better).  And the extra tools was nothing to write home about.

Ubuntu Netbook Remix

Being a Ubuntu advocate, I had to try UNR on principle alone.  I like what they did with NBR to make Ubuntu more netbook friendly.  The best thing was the boot time.  NBR booted in under 20 seconds!!  After using it for a while, I realized I couldn’t do some things that I was very used to in Ubuntu.  NO COMPIZ!!

Finally, I’ve been running Ubuntu 8.10 for a while now.  I feel right at home and I’m very happy.  Boot time has increased, but not terribly.

Patiently waiting for Ubuntu 9.04 so I can upgrade my netbook to see what improvements they can make to an already great OS.

UNC – NCAA Champs

I know I’m a bit late blogging this but…..

GO UNC TARHEELS!!  NCAA CHAMPIONS!!

Sometimes I don’t get to blog as much as I would like.  2 main reasons:

1. Twitter (I can do a microblog very easy and quickly with my Blackberry or with Tweetdeck)

2. I forget about my WordPress account!!  After keeping up with Twitter and Facebook, WordPress runs a long 3rd place.
